The painting was made by Cristóbal de Villalpando in 1688.  The author is considered as one of the greatest Baroque artists of the colonial period. He used the oil painting technique in the church dome. This technique has allowed the painting to be as colorful and bright as it was on its first day.  This is the only mural painting made by this technique.

The topic of this painting is the Blessed Sacrament allegory called in different ways across the ages: Worship of the Eucharist in Heaven,  Apotheosis of the Eucharist, and Old and New Testament in front of the Eucharist.  In the scene some biblical passage and personalities are represented.  The central topic is the worship to the host, held by two angels while the Virgin is worshiping it.  Other elements of the Central Topic are The Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), several cherubims,  and angelical orchestra, a pontiff, and Saint Michael amongst other things.
