In these four days of our holiday we went to Isla de Lobos in an expedition organized by Mexicosub. The group was formed by 5 divers (Beto, Xareni and Juan from Mexicosub, and David and I), 8 excursionists (Isabel, Bernardo, Tadeo, Leti, José Luis, Maren, Alan and Lucas), and 3 additional employees of Mexicosub ("Grillo", "Gato" and "Morro"). In these 4 days we did 8 dives: 6 on the reefs of the island (~10-18m), one on the wreck "El Paris" (~8m), and one on the PEMEX oil rig "Plataforma Tiburones" (~27m).
En estos cuatros días de vacaciones, fuimos a la Isla de Lobos en una expedición organizada por Mexicosub. El grupo consistía en 5 buceadores (Beto, Xareni y Juan, de Mexicosub, además de nosotros dos), 8 excursionistas (Isabel, Bernardo, Tadeo, Leti, José Luis, Maren, Alan y Lucas) y 3 empleados adicionales de Mexicosub ("Grillo", "Gato" y "Morro"). En estos 4 días hicimos 8 buceos: 6 en los arrecifes de la isla (~10-18m), uno en el pecio "El Paris" (~8m), y uno en la Plataforma Tiburones (~27m) de PEMEX.

Mientras nos equipamos, los que no bucean se preparan para las delicias del mediodía: ceviche preparado con el pescado que Beto ha arponeado por la mañana. A challenging 27m dive on Plataforma Tiburones with great visibility (~30m) and some current. For this ocassion David was buddied with Juan, and Itziar with Xareni. An amazing place to dive, with large marine life: barracudas, jacks and tuna, plus some tropical reef species. Still no underwater camera, so, we do not have underwater pictures of this amazing experience to share.
Xareni and Itziar's bubbles break the surface at the base of the platform, and the girls hand their equipment to "Gato" and Juan. Itziar gets out of the water and poses with Bernardo and Juan, and then discusses the fish we have seen underwater with Xareni and Juan. "Morro" is skippering the boat.
Un buceo avanzado a 27m en la Plataforma Tiburones, con buena visibilidad (~30m) y algo de corriente. Para este buceo David se emparejó con Juan e Itziar con Xareni. Un sitio impresionante para el buceo, con vida marina de gran tamaño: barracudas, jureles, atunes, además de varias especies tropicales arrecifales. Como todavía no tenemos carcasa para nuestra cámara, no podemos compartir imágenes subacuáticas de esta asombrosa experiencia.
Las burbujas de Xareni e Itziar emergen a la superficie en la base de la plataforma, y ellas les pasan sus equipos a "Gato" y Juan. Itziar sale del agua y posa con Bernardo y Juan, y luego discute las especies que hemos visto debajo del agua con Xareni y Juan. "Morro" lleva la lancha.

According to the information gathered by Heidi Becker from the Mexican Marine archives, and sent to me by Ana Paulina Torres (from Scubaver), the wreck is not French. The ship was built in England (1911) under the direction of the Mexican naval engineer Don Miguel de Rebolledo. The real name of this steam-ship is "Melchor O'Campo" and it served as light-house boat until the 13th of December of 1920, when it was lost in a marine accident.
De acuerdo a la información recogida por Heidi Becker de los archivos históricos de la Marina Mexicana, que me ha enviado Ana Paulina Torres (de Scubaver), el pecio no es francés. La manufactura del vapor (1911) corrió a cargo de una empresa inglesa, bajo la dirección del ingeniero naval mexicano Don Miguel de Rebolledo. El nombre real del barco es "Melchor O'Campo" y sirvió hasta el 13 de diciembre de 1920 como guarda-faros, día en que se perdió por accidente marítimo.


We dived this shallow wreck (~8m) in conditions similar to the ones show in these photographs. The wreck is home to a great variety of tropical reef fish, and also to some open water species, such as the horse-eye jacks in the photographs. Among the species we saw, we spotted a golden smooth trunkfish, which is considered a rarety.
Buceamos en condiciones similares a las de estas fotografías. El pecio da refugio a una gran variedad de especies arrecifales, además de varias especies de aguas abiertas, como los jureles ojo de caballo que se ven aquí. En el buceo encontramos, entre otros, un pez cofre dorado, que está considerado como una rareza.
