Important Notices ----------------- Please check whether you need ***A VALID VISA*** to enter the country. Visas can be issued by any Mexican embassy or consulate. Normally a tourist visa should be adequate to cover your stay at the conference. During the Christmas--New year period, flights to and from Mexico are usually heavily booked, so make your reservations as early as possible. Conference Location and Dates ------------------------------ The Conference will be held at the Edificio Carolino (University of Puebla) near downtown Puebla. The dates are from Monday January 12th to Friday January 16th, 1998. The city of Puebla, home of over one million inhabitants, is one of the most important Colonial cities in Mexico, and has recently been declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO. It is located 120 km South-east of Mexico City. INAOE, the host Institution, is situated in the small town of Tonantzintla, which is about 10 km west of downtown Puebla. INAOE enjoys a spectacular view of the volcanos Popocatepetl and Iztlacihuatl, both reaching altitudes in excess of 5000 meters. Abstracts --------- Please send your abstracts, set in LaTex documentstyle (without personal macros) or simple ASCII, so that they arrive here before DECEMBER 8, 1997. A book containing all the abstracts will be available to you during the conference. The abstracts will also be available at the Astronomical Data System (ADS) abstract service. Conference Proceedings ---------------------- The proceedings of the conference will include invited reviews and a selected number of contributed papers and is planned to be published by the Cambridge University Press. GENERAL INFORMATION ___________________ Getting to Puebla ------------------ The standard arrival point is the international airport of Mexico City. Upon arrival at the airport, customs consists of a brief passport check and then pushing a button which randomly selects red light (bag search) or green light (pass). The following instructions should prove helpful for you to reach your hotel. There is a comfortable busline called "Estrella Roja" which runs from the airport to the city of Puebla. These leave from the airport zone D (International Arrivals are in zone E) every 30 mins and run practically all day. The fare is around N$60 (new mexican pesos) and is collected on the bus by an attendant, who also serves soft drinks and snacks. The bus ride takes about two hours. The destination in Puebla is either the central bus station, CAPU (when leaving the Airport on the hour from 6:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs) or Estrella Roja's own station (street "4 Poniente", when leaving the airport on the half-hour from 7:30 hrs to 22:30 hrs). If arriving at CAPU we recommend that you get a regulated taxi (yellow and white) ticket to your hotel at one of the kiosks with a TAXIS sign on it. Make sure you take a yellow and white taxi. Taxis from "4 Poniente" have the standard black and yellow colors. Standard fares within Puebla (e.g. from CAPU to the Hotel Colonial) are around N$20 and the fare from CAPU to INAOE (Tonantzintla) is around N$40. We advise you against driving to Puebla unless you are familiar with Mexico City and the Mexico-Puebla motorway. Nor do we recommend taking taxis from the airport to Puebla (approx fare 500 to 600 pesos). Accommodation ------------- You can choose one of the following hotels for your accommodation during the conference. Both are less than 5 minutes walking distance from the conference center. 1. Hotel Colonial (Puebla): This is a modestly priced, but very nice, hotel located downtown. Single room : US$20 per night Double room : US$28 per night (US$14 per person) Advance : US$30 (per person) 2. Hotel San Leonardo (Puebla) : Single room : US$40 per night Double room : US$44 per night (US$22 per person) Advance : US$60 You can reserve the hotel of your choice by filling out the Hotel registration form at the end of this announcement. HOWEVER YOUR RESERVATION IS CONFIRMED ONLY AFTER YOU SEND THE ADVANCE AMOUNT LISTED ABOVE. The method of payment is described below. The rooms will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Registration Fee ---------------- The conference registration fee is US$ 250 for non-students and US$ 200 for students. There is a US$ 50 discount for those registering before December 8th. The registration fee includes -- Conference proceedings -- Reception, Sunday evening -- Reception, Monday evening -- Morning and afternoon tea/coffee, Monday to Friday -- Breakfast and Light lunch (at the hotels), Monday to Friday -- Excursion to Cacaxtla and Wednesday Lunch at INAOE Method of payment of Registration fee and Hotel advance ------------------------------------------------------- Add the amount of the advance appropriate to your choice of hotel to the registration fee and transfer the money to one of the following bank accounts before DECEMBER 8, 1997. 1. Bank of America Douglas Office 8422 1001-5 "G" Avenue Douglas, AZ 85607 Fax: 520 364-5498 Telephone: 520 364-2451 Account Name : INAOE Account Number : 235048983 Wiring Route Number : 121-000-358 2. PLEASE INFORM US THROUGH FAX OR EMAIL OF YOUR TRANSFER (NAME, DATE, CONCEPT AND AMOUNT) so that we can confirm receipt. *PLEASE NOTE*: Transfers to the Mexican bank can be in either pesos or US dollars. Transfers to the US bank MUST be in US dollars Receptions ---------- We will have an informal reception for participants and their guests on the evening of Sunday 11th January. Drinks and snacks will be provided. There will also be a formal reception on Monday evening. Wednesday Afternoon Excursion ----------------------------- The sessions on Wednesday (14th January) finish around noon and there will be a free afternoon to explore the prehispanic temple of Cacaxtla and the INAOE installations. We will offer a Lunch at INAOE where you may enjoy the music of the traditional Mexican Mariachis. Conference Dinner ----------------- The conference dinner will be held on Thursday evening (15 January) at a restaurant to be announced shortly. We anticipate the cost of the dinner to be no more than US$40 per person. Money ----- The Mexican currency is the new peso represented by the symbol N$. The present correct exchange rate with the U.S. dollar is about N$ 8.4 = 1 USD but this changes with time (the dollar usually going up). Please make sure you have some pesos with you BEFORE leaving the Mexico City airport, where there are plenty of currency exchange offices. Once in Mexico, not all places take US dollars or traveller's checks. Foreign credit cards are accepted in major restaurents, stores and hotels. Best exchange rates are found in CASAS de CAMBIO (exchange houses) open only on weekdays, usually from 9 am to 5 pm. Most banks open only on weekdays, also from 9 am to 5 pm. The airport has 24 hour money exchange counters. USA cash or travellers checks are easier to change into pesos than other types of currency. Climate ------- Puebla is located at an altitude of 2200 meters (7100 feet). There is usually no rain at this time of the year. The average temperature varies from some 20 C (68 F) in the daytime to about 5 C (41 F) in the night/morning. Sometimes the night time temperature can drop just below the freezing point. Note that the air is thin and dry. Language -------- Spanish is the official language in Mexico. Because Puebla is not overly frequented by tourists, very few people speak English. We advise you to have a good dictionary and a phrasebook when you venture out. Health ------ Come prepared if you have a medical condition that can be affected by high altitude. The main health risk is traveller's diarrhea and precautions can be taken to reduce this risk. Please refer to a good travel guide for details. Food ------ Mexican cuisine is among the best in the world, but those visiting for the first time should take some precautions. There are some spicy sauces (salsas picantes) which could be very aggressive to unaware mouths: before adding any sauce to your food, try a small amount of it on a piece of bread. Also, to avoid traveller's diarrhea (or any other stomach disease), do not drink tap water and do not eat raw fruits or vegetables without skin. Drink only bottled water.
