Obscured AGN and the duty-cycle of the AGN phenomenon: an unexpected connection? M.Guainazzi, G.Matt, R.Maiolino X-ray properties of Seyfert galaxies have been for long time believed to closely match the expectations of the 0th-order unification scenario, with "type 2" AGN being photoelectrically obscured by cold matter (the torus imprinting?) and "type 1" often oscured by highly ionized material only. However, recent observations are unveling more and more examples of Seyferts, which do not fit this simple scheme. We discuss these results in the framework of the recently discovered transitions between Compton-thin and -thick Seyfert 2 galaxies, which can be explained by a ~10% of local AGN underwenting dramatic changes of their energy output on timescales of ~years. Disentangling the luminosity-redshift dependence of QSO clustering. Nicola Loaring- MSSL, UK Lance Miller - Oxford, UK Brian Boyle/Scott Croom - AAO, Australia Tom Shanks/ Phill Outram - Durham, UK Robert Smith - Liverpool John Moores, UK Using data from the 2dF QSO Redshift survey we have been able to accurately measure the luminosity dependence of QSO clustering independently of any redshift effects. Contrary to the results of galaxy clustering studies, we find no evidence for any luminosity dependence. These results suggest that local astrophysical effects play an important role in QSO formation and have important implications for models of QSO formation and evolution. Tue Jul 15 09:02:58 2003
