The Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (INAOE) is pleased to announce its first Latin American School of Astronomy, to be held at our Institute, in the heart of historic central Mexico, between July 3 and 27, 1995.

        Location

The INAOE is a research and teaching institution that has developed from the old Observatorio de Tonantzintla. It is a place of great astronomical tradition, where the discoveries by Guillermo Haro and coworkers took place.

The INAOE is situated in the small town of Tonantzintla, in the State of Puebla, 120 km east of Mexico City. It offers the spectacular view of the Popocatepetl and the Iztacihuatl volcanoes, both peaking above 5000 meters. The region presents a striking contrast between modern bustling metropolies (the nearby colonial city of Puebla, with over one million inhabitants) and the pastoral atmosphere in the countryside, where Aztec traditions are notable, and many pre-hispanic sites can be visited, such as the impressive Tepanapa pyramid in nearby Cholula, or the Cacaxtla and Xochitecatl temples, recently opened to the public.

Topic of the school and Faculty

The school will be centered around questions related to Interacting Binary Stars research. Topics covered will include formation and evolution of binary stars, physics of binary interactions and specific cases such as Algol systems, cataclysmic variables, SS433, symbiotic stars, etc.

The lectures will be given by the following well-known astronomers:

        Ian Bonnell (Cambridge, UK),
        Philippe Eenens (INAOE, Mexico),
        Alvaro Gimenez (Madrid, Spain),
        Edward Guinan (Villanova, USA),
Yoji Kondo (Goddard Space Flight Center, USA),
        Arcadio Poveda (UNAM, Mexico),
        Jorge Sahade (La Plata, Argentina),
        Kam-Ching Leung (Lincoln, Nebraska),
        Virginia Trimble (Irvine, USA).

        Format of the School

Theoretically-oriented lectures will be given in the morning, six days a week. Four afternoons each week will normally be dedicated to observational and computing techniques, library research and seminars, under the supervision of the School Faculty and INAOE staff.

Participants will have enough time at their disposal to engage in some thinking and do literature searching on the different lectures that will be delivered. A Certificate of Attendance will be given.

        Application Procedures

The school is opened to graduate students and young post-docs in astronomy, particularly coming from Iberoamerican and Caribbean countries, with proven skills in mathematics and physics, and showing a genuine interest in astronomical research. They must have a good knowledge of English, the language of the lectures. Accepted participants should come prepared to talk on the astronomical panorama in their countries as well as on their own research.

Applications should be sent first in electronic form (e-mail preferred, FAX accepted) as soon as possible. A copy should be sent via airmail BEFORE APRIL 15. The application shall contain a short curriculum vitae, stating their academic accomplishements to date, the present stage of their studies and a short summary of their current research project, as well as a letter (200 words or less) by the applicant explaining his/her motivations in applying to this school. The applicants should also provide the names and addresses of two persons who are sending letters of recommendation on their behalf.

The participants will be expected to pay for their travel. Living accomodation and meals will be provided free of charge by the INAOE. A small number of partial travel grants will be offered to participants with limited resources.
