Dr. Jorge L Díaz-Herrera became the 19th President of Keuka College on
July 1, 2001. He was Professor and founding Dean of the B Thomas
Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester
Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, since July, 2002. Prior to
this appointment, he was Professor of Computer Science and Department
Head at SPSU in Atlanta and Yamacraw project coordinator with Georgia
Tech. He has had other academic appointments with Carnegie Mellon’s
Software Engineering Institute, Monmouth University in NJ, George
Mason University in VA, and at SUNY Binghamton in NY.
Dr. Díaz-Herrera completed his undergraduate education in Venezuela, and holds both a Master’s and Ph.D. in Computing Studies from Lancaster University, in the UK. He recently completed the Graduate Certificate in Management Leadership in Education from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
Dr. Díaz-Herrera has conducted extensive consulting services with a number of firms and government agencies including: New York Stock Exchange (SIAC), MITRE Corp., the Institute for Defense Analysis, General Electric, Singer-Link, TRW, EG&G, IBM, among others. He has also provided professional expertise to international organizations including the European Software Institute, Australian Defense Science and Technology Office, Kyoto Computing Gaikum, Kuwait University, Cairo University, Instituto Politecnico Santo Domingo (INTEC), Bilkent University in Turkey, and Malaysia University of Technology, among others. He has chaired several national and international conferences, and has been a technical reviewer for the National Science Foundation, the American Society for Engineering Education, and several conferences and journals. He has more than 90 publications.
Dr. Díaz-Herrera is a member of IEEE-CS Distinguished Visitor Program, a leading writer of the Software Engineering Professional Examination, and co-editor of the Software Engineering volume of the Computing Curricula project. He is also an active member of the CRA-Deans group of the Computer Research Association in Washington, D.C. La Fundación Nacional para las Ciencias, USA-NSF, ha introducido el término "Cyberinfrastructure," o la infraestructura cybernética, para referirse a la necesidad immediata de definir la infraestructura necesaria para la economía del siglo 21. ¿Cuál es el análogo hoy a la infraestructura del siglo 20? (autopistas, redes eléctricas, de teléfonos, aeropuertos, etc., todo para una economía basada en fabricar y vender cosas). ¿Cómo podemos definir la economía del siglo 21? Steve Jobs lo dijo muy bien, "En los Estados Unidos a principios del siglo 20, todos los automóviles eran trucks porque era lo que se necesitaba en una sociedad primeramente agrícola" [New York Times, Mayo 2010]. Podemos decir lo mismo del PC hoy en día, es decir, a principios del siglo 21 todas las PC son iguales, pero la PC como la conocemos hoy se reducirá a un mínimo de usuarios e incluso puede desaparecer totalmente. En esta década de comienzos del siglo 21, están convergiendo muchos de los factores necesarios para dar aporte a la ciberinfraestructura: me refiero a, disculpen el Inglés, ~SSoftware as a Service,~T ~SCloud Computing,~T y ~SDomain-Specific Computing.~T En esta charla, nos enfocamos en cuatro puntos principales: (1) los requerimientos de una infraestructura para la economía del siglo 21; hoy, la informática juega un papel crítico en el funcionamiento del mundo entero y en la economía del siglo 21 muy en particular, y ésta dependencia se incrementa cada día mas y mas. (2) Trataremos la Internet como el elemento fundamental de cómputo conjuntamente con avances logrados hasta ahora sobre la necesidad de reinventar el Internet y desarrollos futuros inmediatos de dispositivos de acceso, y, con mas énfasis, la noción de un mundo total y completamente cyber-connectado por medio de trillones de chips y sensores. (3) Presentaremos ejemplos concretos y completos con relación a avances científicos y tecnológicos en biología computacional, astrofísica, y medicina, mediante el uso de la ciberinfrastructura. Finalmente, hacemos un análisis futurista sobre la idea de proveer al usuario un ambiente virtual donde creamos la ~Silusión~T de un hardware/software específico a las necesidades directas de las comunidades científicas, el cual és el objetivo fundamental de la ciberinfraestructura del siglo 21.
