  • Star formation and the effect of the feedback in the ISM.
SUMMARY

Study of extragalactic star formation (SF) has reached a massive boost with the advent of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and other coordinated multiwavelength observation programs. PHANGS (Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby GalaxieS) is one such program. This new set of observational data traces stellar as well as multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) at spatial scales better than the physical scales at which processes related to SF occur. This allows us to understand in detail the process of star formation as well as the effect of its feedback on the ISM. More importantly, most of these data are available to the general public for its scientific exploitation. Researchers at Mexican institutes have proven expertise in the exploration of the extragalactic star formation, both from the observational and theoretical fronts, that would allow further our understanding of star formation and feedback processes. The Guillermo Haro workshop-2024 is bringing together researchers and students at different institutes and universities in Mexico that are working on fields related to extragalactic star formation to discuss research topics that would help to make best use of observational resources Mexico has in the form of direct access to present and future large observational facilities such as GTC, LMT, LSST, ngVLA etc.

Project Summary:

Over twenty years ago, type Ia Supernovae observations revealed an accelerating Universe expansion, suggesting a significant dark energy presence, often modelled as a cosmological constant, Λ. Despite its pivotal role in cosmology, the standard ΛCDM model remains largely under-explored in the redshift range between the most distant SNIa and the Cosmic Microwave Background. Our group aims to use the James Webb Space Telescope’s advanced capabilities to extend the Hubble flow mapping across an unprecedented redshift range from z ≈ 0 to z ≈ 13.

Utilising a dataset of 231 HII galaxies and extragalactic HII regions, we employ the L − σ relation, correlating the luminosity of Balmer emission lines with their velocity dispersion, to define a competitive technique for measuring cosmic distances that can potentially map the Universe’s expansion over more than 13 billion years, covering almost 98% of its age.
